Hiking With Fido

Hiking With Fido

Do you enjoy hiking? Fido certainly does! In fact, Man’s Best Friend loves to visit new places, and sniff new patches of grass. Dogs can make wonderful hiking companions! Just be sure to always put Fido’s safety first. Read on for some great advice on hiking with your canine pal in this article from a Portland, OR veterinarian.

Supplies

You’ll need to bring along some basic supplies for Fido. Pack food, treats, a leash, waste baggies, dishes (look for collapsible ones), rain gear, and a first-aid kit. You’ll also need to bring water for both you and your pet.

Endurance

Just like people, dogs need time to get in shape. Before bringing your pooch on a vigorous hike, take time to build his endurance first.

Health Check

Hiking isn’t safe or suitable for all our furry friends. Puppies, nursing mamas, senior dogs, small dogs, and pooches with medical issues will be more comfortable staying home. Check with your vet before bringing Fido out to the great outdoors.

Preparation

Make sure your furry pal is current on his vaccines and parasite control. Fido should also be microchipped, and wearing ID tags. Keep copies of your dog’s papers with you at all times.

Training

Fido should have basic doggy obedience commands mastered before going hiking. The five most important commands are Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down. This very important for safety reasons: proper training can keep your dog from running off or approaching a wild animal.

Heat

Heat exhaustion is very dangerous for Man’s Best Friend! Keep a close eye on Fido. If he starts panting heavily, give him some water, and take a break to let him recover.

Paw Care

Before heading out, clip your dog’s claws. Fido won’t get good traction if his nails are too long. Check those furry feet regularly, to make sure your canine buddy hasn’t cut his paw or gotten a pebble stuck between his toes.

Courtesy

Always pick up after your four-legged friend. You may be able to bury your dog’s waste in some areas, but check local regulations first, just to be sure.
