As a 14-year-old, Dr. Paul Haughom started spending summers working on his uncle’s northern Minnesota farm. He did this for the next 10 years, and it was here that he was first exposed to animal care. Occasionally, Dr. Haughom was frustrated by the limitations of care available to the farm animals, and knew he wanted to acquire the knowledge and expertise to provide the best care possible. Before long, he’d made the decision to become a veterinarian!
Thanks to his father’s management job, Dr. Haughom moved around a lot as a kid, spending time in California, Arizona, Colorado, and Minnesota. After two years at a Junior College in California, Dr. Haughom transferred to Oregon State University, receiving his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. He remained at Oregon State to receive his DVM degree from the University’s School of Veterinary Medicine.
After graduating, Dr. Haughom practiced in a small-animal hospital on the windward side of Oahu, Hawaii for two years. In 1986, he returned to Portland and began working as an Associate Veterinarian at a neighboring clinic before purchasing Wildwood Animal Hospital that same year.
Medically, Dr. Haughom enjoys the challenge of dermatology cases and soft-tissue surgeries. He appreciates the advances in technology that minimize discomfort to pet patients, and loves to see a dog or cat become more active without the use of medications!
Dr. Haughom and his wife currently have three pets at home: Bella is a recently-adopted yellow Labrador retriever who is a real hit with the clinic’s staff and clients, and Mojo and Joey are lovable cats who love to bolt around the house together.
In his spare time, Dr. Haughom enjoys playing golf and has even traveled to Scotland to play on the British Open courses. He’s also a passionate photographer, and particularly enjoys night and landscape photography.
