Do you have a dog? Man’s Best Friend is a wonderful friend and companion, but taking care of him is a lot of work. We can help! Read on as a Portland, OR vet offers some helpful dog care hacks.
Does your pet run and hide when he hears the word ‘Bath’? Call Fido into the bathroom, have him jump into the tub, and then offer him a yummy snack. After a few weeks of this, you will find your canine buddy has mysteriously become much more fond of the bathroom! Another thing that can make bathtime a little easier is to get a clear shower curtain. Cut two slits in it, about four feet apart, going from the bottom about halfway up. When you want to give your pooch a bath, hang it, and put your arms through the holes. You won’t get splashed nearly as much.
Clip a carabiner onto the end of Fido’s leash. That way, if you want to stop and chat, you can easily tie him to a tree or post. (Note: never leave your dog unattended, as this can be very dangerous.) Another hack? Designate a specific jacket for walking your pup. Fill the pockets with everything you need: waste baggies, a flashlight, treats, spare keys, a phone battery, and gloves. You may also find it helpful to stash extra waste baggies around your home and yard, so you don’t have to run inside for them if you run out.
Even the best-trained dog can have accidents sometimes. To get stains out of your carpet, start by blotting up all the moisture you can with a paper towel. Then, spray the area with vinegar and water. Let it sit for about 10 minutes. Blot with paper towels, and sprinkle baking soda on the spot. Once it’s dry, vacuum it up. The stain and the smell will be gone!
Did you know that a child’s mattress can make a great doggy bed? This is a wonderful option for large breeds. Plus, you can cover it with fitted sheets, which are easy to wash! You can also upcycle many common items into beds for Fido. Look online for great ideas and step-by-step instructions!
