National Cat Health Month

Did you know that February is National Cat Health Month? While keeping cats healthy is important all year, this is a great time to talk about some of the things you can do to protect your little furball from illness and injury. Read on as a Portland, OR vet offers some key tips on keeping your kitty healthy.

Good Food

Making sure Fluffy is getting proper nutrition is very important. Not all cat foods are created equal, so choose a premium brand without a lot of fillers or by-products. While treats are fine, you don’t want to go overboard with fatty snacks. If your kitty becomes obese, she’ll face some very serious health risks! Ask your vet for specific advice.

Veterinary Care

Healthcare is just as important for pets as it is for people. We recommend that all of our feline pals be spayed, neutered, and microchipped. Keeping Fluffy current on her exams and parasite control products is also important. At home, if you notice any signs of sickness, contact your vet immediately.

Activity/Stimulation

It’s very easy to underestimate how important enrichment is for pets. Fluffy should have toys; interesting views; and furniture to climb and explore. You don’t have to spend a lot of money on your pet’s entertainment, however: there are lots of great options for DIY cat toys and furniture. Rotate your kitty’s things out regularly to keep things fresh and fun for her. We also recommend that you play with your feline pal daily.

Proper Facilities

Cats like their powder rooms nice and clean. Keep Fluffy’s litterbox clean by scooping it daily and cleaning it more thoroughly every week. (We know, this isn’t the best part of being owned by a cat, but it is very important!)

Safety

Kitties have a remarkable ability to get themselves into trouble. Keep Fluffy safe and sound by doing some basic kittyproofing. Remove or secure anything that could be potentially dangerous, such as toxic plants, plastic bags, chemical, medicine, and small or sharp objects. We also strongly recommend keeping your cat inside, where she will be safe from cars, predators, weather, and other hazards.

Purrs

Cats are very emotional, and are always happiest when they feel loved. Pay attention to Fluffy every day, and keep that little motor going!
