Signs of Pain in Pets

September is Animal Pain Awareness Month! It isn’t always easy to tell if something is hurting our furry friends. After all, your pet can’t tell you they don’t feel well. Therefore, it’s important to know the warning signs to look for. A local Portland, OR vet lists some symptoms animal pain in this article.

Crankiness

Being in pain doesn’t usually do much for one’s mood. This is also true for pets. Our animal companions can get rather grouchy if they don’t feel well.

Vocalizations

A yowl, yelp, or whimper is a fairly clear indication that something is wrong. But changes in your pet’s usual vocalizations can also be an indication of pain. For instance, if your cat is usually quiet, but suddenly starts meowing constantly, your feline buddy may be hurting.

Unusual Posture

Another thing to watch for is stiff or awkward gaits or positions. Your furry friend may sit or stand in an unusual position if they aren’t feeling well.

Isolation

Pets often go off by themselves when they are sick or injured. If your furry buddy seems uncharacteristically withdrawn, and doesn’t want to interact with you, he or she could be sick.

Reduced Appetite

Healthy animals have healthy appetites. While some pets can be finicky, even if your animal friend doesn’t like what you offer, he or she should still be interested in food. A lack of appetite is almost always a red flag.

Limping

Limping is one of the most obvious signs of pain in pets. A limp that starts suddenly is often the sign of an injury. Pets can also limp because of medical issues like arthritis and hip dysplasia. These limps are often mild at first, but will get worse as the condition progresses.

Licking/Chewing

Pets often lick or nibble at spots that are bothering them. For instance, if Fido is getting arthritis in his paw, he may bite at that foot.

Shying

Pets sometimes flinch, jump, hiss, or growl if you touch an area that hurts. Sometimes animals bite if they are in pain, so be very careful when handling a sick or injured pet!

Appearance

Unkempt, greasy, or matted fur can be signs that your furry pal is ill. Sunken eyes are another symptom.
