One great thing about cats is the fact that you don’t have to walk them. Fluffy will discretely use her litterbox to do her business. However, there are some things for you to keep in mind when setting up your kitty’s bathroom. Read on as a Portland, OR vet discusses setting up your pet’s purrsonal powder room.
Choosing the right spot for the litterbox is very important. For obvious reasons, you don’t want it in a kitchen. It should be in an area that is easy for Fluffy to access, but still offers a bit of privacy.
Some cats are actually quite finicky about litters. Fluffy may not care for clumping litters, while Mittens may have a preference for a certain brand. Generally, you can go with whatever you and your furry friend prefer. The only exception here is if you have a kitten. Since baby cats are rather clumsy, they sometimes accidentally ingest litter. This can be very dangerous with clay and clumping litters, so avoid these until your little furball is fully grown.
Fluffy’s litterbox should be in an area that offers good ventilation, but isn’t too drafty. If you put it in a laundry room or spare bathroom, keep the fan running in that room.
We probably don’t have to tell you that litterboxes can get, well, rather stinky. It’s definitely worth your while to invest in a good air purifier. You can also experiment with different deodorizing products, such as liners, air fresheners, and sprays. Plants will also help fight bad odors. You can find a list of pet-safe options at the ASPCA website here .
Litterboxes may be convenient, but they aren’t very attractive, and don’t exactly make great centerpieces. You may want to camouflage or conceal your pet’s box. One options is to repurpose an old end table with doors. Cut a kitty hole in one side for Fluffy, and then use the doors for access. You can also hide your cat’s bathroom behind a folding screen. Or, put it beneath an end table with legs, and drape a cloth over the table. Another option is to get pieces that were custom-made for Fluffy. Some of these are really attractive!
