Fido's Halloween Costume
October 15, 2020

Do you love getting dressed up for Halloween? If so, you may be tempted to include your dog in the fun, and get a costume for him, too. Fido does look adorable dressed up! Just be sure to put your furry friend’s health and safety first. Here, a Portland, OR veterinarian offers some tips on choosing Fido’s Halloween outfit.

Hazards

Our canine pals are both playful and curious. They also love food. Fido may very well try to eat his outfit. Keep this in mind when shopping for your pup. Anything with small parts, like buttons, could be a hazard. Dangling pieces are also unsafe. We also recommend avoiding zippers. These can get caught in dogs’ fur, which can be very painful. Finally, make sure that your furry pal’s outfit isn’t flammable.

Shopping

Another thing that is very important is making sure that your dog’s outfit fits him well. Our canine companions come in all shapes and sizes! Avoid anything that is tight, hot, or itchy, as well as anything that restricts your pet’s vision or movement. We recommend getting your pup’s measurements before you go shopping. You’ll want to measure Fido’s chest, shoulder height, torso, and the length of his spine, from his neck to the base of his tail. You may want to keep these measurements on your phone, so you always have them with you.

Treats

This one isn’t exactly costume-related, but it is worth mentioning. Most Halloween parties or events are going to have lots of candy. Don’t let your pooch have any! Many of those sweet treats contain things like chocolate, caffeine, raisins, xylitol, and/or nuts, which aren’t safe for dogs.

Tips

Dogs are all very unique. Some won’t blink an eye at being dressed up like a taco. Others will be immediately uncomfortable. If your four-legged friend doesn’t like wearing clothes, don’t force him to dress up. Snap a quick photo, and then take the outfit off. Fido can still look adorable with something simpler, like a bandana or bow tie!

Personality

All this aside, if you do dress Fido up, have some fun with it. Your canine buddy may look super cute in something that works with your costume. No matter what you do, don’t forget to take some pictures!
